As a growing percentage of Hollywood production migrates northward to Vancouver and Toronto, film and digital media companies are looking for a more convenient, cost-effective solution—and Mesa del Sol fits the bill. Just under a two hour flight from Los Angeles (and mere minutes from the Albuquerque International Sunport), Mesa del Sol offers state-of-the-art facilities in a highly creative, extremely affordable environment.
Albuquerque Studios is already experiencing these benefits, with 316,000 square feet of studio, production and support space at Mesa del Sol. The new facility has also attracted Sony Pictures Imageworks, the digital production company responsible for the Spider-Man™ franchise, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Surf’s Up. In addition, the University of New Mexico now offers a new multidisciplinary program in Film and Digital Media, fostering the development of a specialized workforce and further cementing the region’s potential to become the site of a major industry cluster.
In support of this goal, both state and city governments offer a number of generous incentives for film and digital media companies, including:
• 25% film production tax rebate (including New Mexico labor)
• Production loans for qualifying projects
• 50% reimbursement of wages for on-the-job film crew training
• State sales tax waiver (primarily for commercials and PSAs)
