SOUTHWEST CONTRACTORS PICK MESA DEL SOL’S INNOVATION PARK BUILDING 2 AT BEST OF 2009Second award for Mesa del Sol Office Building
Albuquerque, NM – October 6, 2006 – Forest City Covington, developer of Mesa del Sol, has received its second award in as many weeks for its Innovation Park Building 2, the office building now occupied by Fidelity Investments. The building was one of many honored by the Southwest Contractor in its Best of 2009 contest. The construction team will be honored on Tuesday, Dec. 8th at a special award ceremony.
“This building is fantastic and this latest award is a great way to confirm that Mesa del Sol is an innovative, mixed-use, master-planned community with great potential,” said Michael Daly, president of Mesa del Sol. “ We congratulate everyone who had a part in this project, our architect, the general contractor, all of the sub contractors, out staff and of course, Fidelity Investments, our tenant.”
The building is now eligible to compete in the national Best of 2009 competition which will be announced later this year in Engineering News-Record, part of the McGraw-Hill networks of regional construction publications.
Applicants were judged on a number of criteria including teamwork, safety, innovation and aesthetics. Economic and social benefits to the community were often the deciding factors in close contests.
Designed by the Albuquerque-based firm of Dekker Perich Sabatini, Klinger Constructors LLC is the general contractor. Other Albuquerque companies that worked on the design or the construction include: Bohannan Huston, Allied Engineering and Design, CCI Engineering, Robin Hendrickson, Hanna Plumbing, TI Architect / BHDP and Chaparral Electric.
The building was designed to achieve LEED “Silver” certification, but is now anticipated to reach Gold certification and it is expected to be the first LEED Gold Office Building at Mesa del Sol.
The award-winning building was designed and built for tenant Fidelity Investments. It is a two-story, 217,892 square foot office building. Phase I of the office campus was completed in December 2008 and employees began moving in to the building that month. Phase II of the project was completed in March 2009.
The building includes use of construction materials, including concrete and steel; items selected based on their post-industrial and post-consumer recycled content, reducing the strain on energy resources. High-efficiency fixtures were used throughout the entire building, resulting in a 30 percent savings in water. A chilled water system with cooling towers supplies the air conditioning. By not using harmful chemicals, occupants are protected from the harmful effects of off gassing. When fully operational, the building is expected to use 28 percent less energy than a typical building of similar size.
In addition, Mesa del Sol’s Aperture Center received an honorable mention in the contest.
